为了缩减日渐扩大的经常帐赤字，同时为本币卢比“减压”，印度政府正式限制非必需品进口。
9月26日周三午夜，印度全新进口关税措施生效，包括宝石、航空燃油、塑料、家电和鞋履等十九种商品进口关税提高。
其中，航空燃油关税税率从零提升到5%，对航空公司造成一定打击；钻石及其他用于珠宝制造的宝石税率由5%上调至7.5%；进口空调、冰箱和小型洗衣机进口税率从10%翻倍至20%，价格必将更为昂贵。轮胎、扬声器、鞋履、旅行箱、旅行袋以及部分塑料制造的餐具和厨房用品均将面临更高关税。上一财年，印度进口这些特定商品的价值总额高达118亿美元。
路透社分析认为，此举或将影响中国和韩国等国家对印度的出口，受影响的企业则包括韩国电子业巨擘三星电子、LG电子、耐克公司、行李箱制造商新秀丽以及音频设备制造商Bose Corp。
